Make this the summer you love your body more! Feel better in your body this summer with these three simple tips.
I’ve shared my body image struggles with you before. But I know that I’m not the only woman who has felt insecure about her body, so I want to revisit this topic.
Summer can be an especially difficult time if you’re already feeling not so great about your body. Shorts, tank tops, swimsuits….the clothing situation is pretty minimal.
For years, I covered up my body during the summer or just avoided outings that required a swimsuit. There were many summers that I never even dipped my toes into a body of water.
Now, summer is my favorite time of year. I love going swimming, hiking, kayaking, riding my bike and just hanging out outside.
My body didn’t suddenly become perfect. I have cellulite, round thighs, wide hips and belly rolls. So what changed?
I made three shifts that helped me change my mindset about my body and give me more appreciation for my body.
These are the things that helped me begin to embrace my body at whatever phase it’s in.
- Make taking care of yourself your top priority. When I started a consistent self-care practice, I began to appreciate my body more and embrace my body. I’m not the fittest I’ve ever been and I’m more curvy than I’ve been in the past. But I’m healthier than ever because I take care of myself – mind, body and spirit. I move my body in ways that feels good, I eat nourishing foods (and make room for conscious indulgences), I make time for my spiritual practice, and I give myself permission to relax. Taking care of myself helps me feel good in my body.
- Ditch the negative self-talk. I used to be the queen of negative self-talk. I would pick apart every inch of my body, and it would leave me feeling totally defeated. That hopeless feeling would often lead to a cycle of binge eating, over exercising and restrictive dieting. When I began to notice my negative thoughts and replace them with more loving thoughts, I began to treat my body better and then feel better about my body. It’s all connected! We’ll always have days when we’re feeling blah and don’t love every part of our body, and that’s ok. When I have days like that, I notice how I’m feeling and make an effort to do something that will make me feel good like taking a bath, reading a book, having coffee with a friend or relaxing with a glass of wine while I watch Netflix.
- Don’t fall into the comparison trap. This is probably the hardest of all of my tips. Have you ever been scrolling your Instagram feed, and you suddenly find yourself feeling totally inadequate and insecure? Whether your comparing your body to strangers on social media, your friends or random strangers you see on the street, it will steal your joy. One of my favorite quotes is, “Admire someone else’s beauty without questioning your own.” If there are certain people on social media that bring up negative thoughts or feelings, it may serve you to unfollow them for awhile. Or maybe when you notice yourself comparing your body to someone else’s, you can use a mantra like, “She is beautiful, and so am I” or “I love myself. I respect myself. I am good enough as I am.”
