Happy 4th of July! I hope you have fun plans for the holiday.
I’m in Atlanta, and I will spend the Fourth at my cousin Kristi’s wedding! I get to be a bridesmaid in her wedding! I’m very excited for all the festivities, and to celebrate the Fourth while celebrating Kristi and her soon-to-be husband Avery.
The BF and I usually start our holiday by running the Firecracker 5K/10K in Superior, NE. We then put on ridiculous patriotic outfits (so much red, white and blue) and spend the evening hanging out with friends around a fire pit making s’mores and having drinks. Which is why I want to share some of my fave summery cocktails!
First, I want to give you a little disclaimer. These cocktails can’t really be considered “healthy” because booze isn’t healthy. Total buzzkill, right? But these are cocktails that I’ve created that are healthier because they are lower in calories and have some ingredients that add some nutrients.
You will notice some similarities between most of these cocktail recipes – vodka and soda water. They are my go-to cocktail ingredients. Soda water is a great mixer because it is calorie-free, but it’s bubbly and wonderful. Vodka has about 100 calories per shot, so you’re not adding a ton of cals to your cocktail.
Enough talk, let’s get to the drinks!
I love this cocktail! It tastes really light and fresh. I also love to eat the blueberries when the cocktail is gone!
My go-to cocktail in the summer is super simple. Adding just a splash of pomegranate juice only adds a few calories and the health benefits of the juice. You could add blueberries to make it even more 4th of July-ish!
I love a light and refreshing cocktail in the summer. This was a recipe I found from Skinnygirl Cocktails. You can use the Skinnygirl Cucumber vodka or any cucumber vodka. You could also steep cucumbers in regular vodka overnight (or longer).
I made this cocktail for the 4th of July last year! I LOVE it. So tart and delicious.
Last summer, I experimented with juicing fruits and then adding the juice to my cocktails. Ah-Mazing! Watermelon was my fave. If you don’t have a juice, you can throw some watermelon in a blender or just muddle it.

If you’re planning on indulging in some alcoholic beverages, remember these tips:
- Stay hydrated. Alcohol acts as a diuretic making you dehydrated. In addition to using the bathroom more often when you drink, you will also likely become dehydrated because of the hot temperatures. Drink a glass of water after each alcoholic beverage you consume.
- Eat something. Foods rich in fat and protein help to slow alcohol absorption. This doesn’t mean you should go for potato salad and hot dogs. Have a burger, but top it with healthy greens and veggies or go for a grilled chicken breast. Have a salad with avocado or nuts to add healthy fats.
- Plan ahead. If you know you’ll be indulging in alcohol, make up for those additional calories by working out and making healthier choices. If you burn 500 calories in the morning with a workout and cut out a snack, you’ll have those additional calories to use on your cocktails. It’s math.
Have a happy and healthy 4th of July!!
