How to make your own all-natural lip balm

Over the past year or so, I’ve been slowly making my skin care routine more and more natural. What exactly does that mean? Well, I’m getting rid of processed junk just like I did with my diet.

On an average day, I slather, rub or spray well over 20 products on my body! What?!?! True story.

Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, body wash, hair beautifier, styling cream, heat protecting spray, hair spray, eye cream, moisturizer with SPF, body lotion, foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, lip balm, deodorant, perfume, eye make up remover and night cream.

While cosmetic companies and the FDA say that the chemicals in beauty products are safe, there really haven’t been long term studies on the effects of beauty products on the body. That’s pretty scary considering the fact that your skin acts as a sponge, absorbing around 60 percent of the topical products you use!! (source)

“Almost 90 percent of the 10,500 cosmetics and skin care ingredients known to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have not been evaluated for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, the FDA, or any other publicly accountable institution, according to the Environmental Working Group.” (source)

In another post I’ll share some of my favorite natural beauty products that I purchase, but today I want to share one of my DIY beauty products. Yes, you can make your own beauty products!

I first made my own lip balm around Christmas and gifted them to the girls who came to my healthy holiday cocktail party. It was my first try at making lip balm, and I didn’t love the texture. I think I used too much beeswax and the lip balm took a lot of rubbing to get it to transfer onto your finger.

So I changed the recipe a bit, and this new version is so perfect! I made almond lip balm and peppermint lip balm, but you can customize your own. I just used pure almond extract (from my kitchen) and Young Living peppermint essential oil. You could use pure vanilla extract, lavender essential oil or any essential oil that you like. Just make sure your essential oil is food grade.

Don’t know where to buy essential oils? Check out my Essential Oils 101 post!

I love making my own lip balm because it’s super easy and I know exactly what’s going on to my body. What’s wrong with buying lip balm? Well, many store-bought lip balms contain phenol, which has been shown to cause kidney and liver damage, petroleum jelly, which may contain carcinogens, mineral oil, which may contain cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and artificial colors and fragrances (source).

And I’m guessing lip balm is one of the beauty products that goes into your body more than products you put on other parts of your body because you are constantly licking your lips, drinking liquids and eating. So try my lip balm recipe that is free from harmful ingredients!

Homemade Lip Balm

1 tbsp. chopped beeswax

2 tbsp. coconut oil

1 tsp. honey

1 tsp. pure almond or vanilla extract or a few drops of essential oils

Place beeswax in a double boiler (or a bowl placed over a pot of boiling water). When beeswax is nearly melted, add coconut oil and honey. Stir as ingredients melt together. Add extract or essential oil. Stir and pour into lip balm pots. I used these lip balm pots that I bought on Amazon.

Let cool until the lip balm becomes solid. Place lips on lip balm pots.

If DIY beauty isn’t your thing, my fave manufactured lip balms are Burt’s Bees and Eos.

Do you use natural skin care products? What are your favorites?
