Hydrating Watermelon Cucumber Slushie

During the hot and humid summer months, I’m always a lot more conscious of how much water I’m drinking.

Year round, I aim to drink three of my 30-ounce bottles of water a day (more if I’ve had a tough workout). But I find myself feeling more thirsty in the summer or getting a dull headache when I’m out in the heat for too long. It just takes more effort to stay hydrated in the summer, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors.

Although I love water and don’t usually have trouble drinking lots of water throughout the day, I know there are people out there that don’t love water. Lucky for you, there are lots of foods that can help with hydration!

Most natural, whole foods have some water content. Many fruits and vegetables contain 80-98% water (source). But there are some fruits and vegetables that are hydration powerhouses.

You can’t stop drinking water and start eating these foods though! You have to keep drinking water, but you can supplement your water drinking with some of these hydrating foods…

  • Cucumbers = 96% water
  • Watermelon = 96% water
  • Pineapple = 95% water
  • Zucchini = 95% water
  • Celery = 95% water
  • Blueberries = 95% water
  • Lettuce = 95% water
  • Tomatoes = 94% water
  • Pears = 92% water
  • Strawberries = 92% water
  • Broccoli = 91% water
  • Grapefruit = 90% water
  • Cantaloupe = 89% water

I love watermelon and cucumber together, which is why I created this slushie. One of my fave summer salads is watermelon + cucumber + feta + balsamic vinaigrette. So yum!

I left the peel on the cucumber because I have a Ninja blender and it does a good job of blending everything up. But if you have a cheap blender, I would suggest peeling your cucumber so you don’t have peels in your slush. I had a few tiny pieces, but it wasn’t anything big enough to chew.

If you’re feeling sassy, you could add a serving of chia seeds to this drink. Chia seeds help the body absorb water. You can check out my Watermelon Chia Juice here.
