Over a year ago, I tried kombucha for the first time. You can read about that fiasco here.
I really didn’t like it very much, and didn’t give it much thought after that first try. But a lot of the healthy bloggers that I follow drink kombucha (and I like to be part of the cool crowd), and the new Hy-Vee here has a ginormous selection of kombucha (and I feel like I want to buy everything there). So I decided to give it another shot.
But first, you’re probably wondering what the heck kombucha is. I had no idea what it was that first time I tried it. Well, kombucha is made from sweetened tea that has been fermented by a colony of bacteria and yeast. Yum!
Many kombucha lovers claim that the fizzy drink helps detoxify the body, aids with digestion, improves gut health and is an immunity booster. I don’t know about the whole “detoxifying the body” thing. Your organs and immune system actually detoxify your body for you. I think detoxing has become a buzz word in the health and diet industry in the past few years and people are sucked in.
However, there is evidence that live bacteria can help improve digestion and probiotics may boost immunity. Check out this NPR article for more on that.
So the bottom line is that it’s not going to cure all your ailments, make you skinny and beautiful and solve all your problems, but there may be some health benefits.
I love to snack and I love sweets, so I’m always looking for healthy sweet snacks to satisfy my cravings. I thought I would give kombucha another try because it would make a healthy snack or even a healthy sweet dessert option.
I picked up a small can of Kombucha Wonder Drink in Asian Pear and Ginger. The thing that turned me off of kombucha in the first place is the vinegar-y smell and taste. But I didn’t mind it in this flavor. Maybe I’ve gotten used to vinegar since I drink an apple cider vinegar drink every morning now.
But I actually enjoyed this little can of kombucha. It was a great mid-morning snack at work that got rid of my hunger pangs before lunch and actually gave me a little boost of energy.
I will definitely drink kombucha again. In fact, I picked up two bottles of Synergy Kombucha at Hy-Vee this week. I got a recommendation via Instagram to try the kind with chia seeds, so I bought Raspberry Chia. I also bought GingerBerry because I thought it sounded good.
The Synergy brand was on sale for $2.99 each. I think it’s normally nearly $4 a bottle. There was another brand that is regularly $2.99.
Because of the price, kombucha may not be something I buy regularly. But I think it will make a good treat every once in a while. I think a glass over ice would be good, and I bet you could make cocktails out of kombucha! Let the experimenting begin!
Do you drink kombucha? If so, what’s your favorite kind/flavor?
