Maca has been on my list of wellness foods to try for quite some time. Well, I finally bought some maca powder and I started adding it to my morning smoothies and oatmeal, and I’m into it.
Maca is grown in high altitude in the Peruvian Andes where the days get lots of sunlight and the nights are freezing. So it’s a resilient plant!
It’s also known as Peruvian ginseng and is an adaptogenic plant. Adaptogens help to create more balance in the body by strengthening your adrenal system and moderating your stress responses.
Maca helps the body build resilience and balances the body’s endocrine system, which produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood.
I was interested in maca’s hormone balancing properties because I was experiencing really painful cramps, minor headaches, and fatigue during my periods.
It also promotes natural energy without caffeine or other stimulants.
I’ve been using Navitas Organics Maca Powder.
I love making a rich chocolate smoothie with maca powder because it adds a nutty flavor. Here’s my favorite recipe…
Chocolate Maca Smoothie
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup coconut milk
1 frozen banana
1 tbsp. almond butter
1 scoop chocolate plant protein powder
1/2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. maca powder
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Enjoy!
In addition to adding maca to smoothies or oats, you can also add it to baked goods, desserts, and drinks. Here are a few recipes that I’m excited to try…
