I’ve always been an advocate of creating your own happiness and pleasure on days like Valentine’s Day (and every day, really).
Maybe Valentine’s Day has never been a big deal for you, but if you’re like me then you’ve put a lot of pressure on Valentine’s Day being this perfectly romantic day. We often create high expectations for our significant other, keep our fingers crossed that our crush will finally notice us or hope that we’ll randomly bump into the love of our life. I’ve totally been there.
Whether we’re single or in a relationship, we rely on someone else to make the day special.
When we have expectations for what we feel like someone else should do, we’ll more than likely end up feeling disappointed. Before Valentine’s Day, let go of expectations for others. Then practice gratitude for whatever your partner ends up doing for you or for whatever happens on Valentine’s Day. You won’t feel disappointed and you’ll have more love and appreciation for your partner and the day.
And create the Valentine’s Day that you truly want!
I’ve been doing this for years now. As Valentine’s Day approaches, I think about how I want to feel that day. Nourished, loved, relaxed, pampered, peaceful. Then I plan a few things that will cultivate those feelings.
In the past, I’ve bought myself French macarons, I’ve picked up sushi take out for lunch, I’ve made a cake, I’ve gone shopping, and more! It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive or take the entire day. You can do one or two things to feel the way you want to feel.
Plan ahead and give yourself the gift of self-care this Valentine’s Day. Here are some of my favorite self-care gifts.
Virtual Yoga Studio Membership or Class Punch Card
Moving your body in ways that feel good can help you to feel more connected to your body, more energized, more grounded, stronger, and just feel good in your body.
In the movement classes in my virtual yoga studio, I use body neutral cues, create a body neutral/body positive environment, and offer alternative movements to accommodate bodies of many shapes, sizes, and abilities.
My classes aim to help you practice body acceptance and cultivate more compassion for yourself.
A membership gives you access to over 70 streaming yoga classes, guided meditations, and mini workshops on body image, self-care, and Intuitive Eating. You also receive access to weekly Zoom yoga classes. A membership is $12 a month or $120 per year.
A 5 Punch ClassCard gives you access to five Zoom yoga classes for $40.
Face Care Tools
Both of these beauty tools are used for facial massage, and can help improve your skin. They can reduce dark circles and puffiness under the eyes and help reduce wrinkles.
I absolutely love my Gua Sha and jade roller. I like to combine coconut oil with lavender essential oil or my favorite facial oil, and massage it into my skin with either the gua sha or jade roller.
Organic Wine or a Wine Subscription
Organic wine made in the United States doesn’t have added sulfites. Sulfites may cause headaches, respiratory issues, skin breakouts, and other reactions in some people.
Plus organic wine means there aren’t pesticides used on the grapes, so you know that you’re consuming a wine that is free from toxic chemicals.
This is totally on my wish list and I plan to gift this to myself someday. I love wine, but it often causes my sinuses to fill up making breathing uncomfortable and giving me headaches the following day (even after just 1-2 glasses of wine).
You could try Organic Wine from Thrive Market, Winc Wine Subscription, Dry Farms Wine Subscription.
A New Bra
I’ve recently made buying new bras and underwear a priority. I realized that what I had been wearing didn’t make me feel good. Honestly, buying new bras that I love and that fit well has helped me feel better in my body.
If your bra collection is looking sad, consider upgrading to better fitting and prettier bras. Feeling good in your body can start with having undergarments that fit well and make you feel sexy.
I ordered a ThirdLove Bra, and realized I had been buying the wrong size bra for years. ThirdLove has you take a quiz and answer a bunch of questions about your boobs, so you can get a perfect fit.
Plus ThirdLove offers extended sizes and uses models of all shapes and sizes. The CEO also called out Victoria’s Secret’s CEO after he made comments about how no one wants to see plus size models.
Some of my other favorite brands are Knix, Savage x Fenty, and Aerie.
A Book on Self-Love
The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love is one of my favorite books.
“Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies.
The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world — for us all.”
1:1 Health Coaching Session with a Body Positive Coach
Shift your focus from weight to health, learn how to connect to your hunger cues, discover what foods make you feel your best, shed food guilt and shame, discover why you eat emotionally, find out how to trust your body more, create a weight neutral self-care practice, create a body kindness and compassion practice, and more.
A New Outfit That Fits
Feeling good in your clothing is one way to feel better in your body. There’s nothing worse than staring into a closet full of clothes that no longer fit or trying to squeeze into clothes that are too small.
Invest in a new outfit that makes you feel amazing in your body, as it is now.
I love shopping brands that are size inclusive and use models of all sizes to market their clothes.
A Massage or Facial
There’s really nothing better than getting a professional massage or facial.
A House Plant
A bouquet of flowers is nice, but gift yourself with a gorgeous succulent or air purifying house plant and you can enjoy it for so much longer than just a few days.
Your Favorite Dessert
Go to a bakery and buy yourself something you absolutely love. Get cozy, pour yourself a glass of wine or make a cup of tea, create a relaxing environment and enjoy every single bite.
