The Superfood You Must Add to Your Green Smoothies

I

During the summer, I am a smoothie-making machine! I actually love smoothies all year round, but smoothies taste even more delicious when it’s extra hot outside.

I really don’t have a go-to smoothie. I like to mix things up to keep my smoothies interesting. But I do love making green smoothies. They always turn out so beautifully, and they are packed with nutrients.

One of the ingredients I always add to my green smoothies is spirulina, a blue-green micro-algae that grows in fresh water lakes and streams. Why?!?!? You might be asking me/yourself.

I mentioned spirulina in my post – How to make the perfect green smoothie – but I thought it was worth mentioning the magic of spirulina in its own post.

Spirulina is packed full of nutrition – protein, antioxidants, fatty acids and iron. It’s also easy for your body to digest and spirulina is a rich source of chlorophyll, which is detoxifying. It’s a total superfood! (source)

Spirulina definitely has a strong flavor. So if you’re trying it for the first time, add 1/2 tsp. to your smoothie. I usually add 1 tsp. to my smoothies, but I worked my way up ; )

You can even make a green smoothie bowl!

I’ve been using spirulina in smoothies, but according to Nuts.com you can add it to guacamole or salad dressings!

I whipped up a quick and easy salad dressing using the Nuts.com recipe as a guide. I combined 1/4 cup grapeseed oil, 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp. spirulina, pink Himilayan salt and fresh ground black pepper.

Next, I’ll be adding a bit of spirulina to my guac!

Find out more about spirulina here.

*Nuts.com provided the inspiration for me to share how I use spirulina.
